Cream and lotions spoil after a year

Creams and lotions spoil. Don't keep them longer than a year.

I reached into the back of the medicine cabinet and discovered a tube of hair grooming cream. It wasn’t exactly ancient; I remember buying it around the time of my wedding, which was about four years ago. The tube was more than half full. I decided to pop open the cap and take a sniff. I remembered liking how this product smelled when I bought it at a hair salon.

My first reaction was to pull back. It was harsh, like the cheap santa cologne many smell-blind (anosmic) men wear during the holidays. The astringent santa pine odor made my eyes water. I decided to nose back in to see if I could get deeper. It was rough going. Jet fuel emerged and spun around in my brain. Breathing the mixture made me feel as nauseous as a flying sled carnival ride. I managed to catch a whiff of a fleeting, slightly sweet waxy under layer, but it disappeared as quickly as it came, much like santa himself.
